OPENING DAY 2022

Published Sun 30 Oct 2022

Fortunately, the predictions of the weather bureau did not come to pass, and Opening Day stayed fine, although somewhat blustery.

Proceedings began with the formal part of the day, and Steve Beashel performing the MC role. Commodore Jamie Dorrity welcomed everyone, and daughter Georgia gave us a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. We also heard from invited guests Tim Richardson MP and Cr Tamsin Beardsley. Mr. Richardson announced a very popular commitment to $2 million for dredging. Reverend Graeme Disney performed the annual Blessing of the Fleet. Part of the ceremony was the unveiling of a plaque to well known identity and Club member Peter Allnutt on the flagpole by the Creek. A lovely tribute.

As the weather did not permit the sail past, Jamie was taken around the Island by boat, receiving the ritual soaking to the delight of all.

With the formalities over, the more relaxed part of the day began, with music provided by the Dene Ford Trio, and a hearty lunch.

The theme of the day was Under the Sea. Paul Tozer won the best dressed boat, a $200 Bridge (formerly Doyle’s) Hotel voucher and a bottle of wine. Carol Flanagan was runner up, receiving an $80 Bridge Hotel voucher and bottle of wine. The best costume was won by Helen Ruhsam in her creative jelly fish costume which won her an $80 Bridge Hotel voucher and a bottle of wine. The children’s prize was won by Harriet (13), Georgina (10) and Isabel (7) who all looked gorgeous in their costumes. As it was impossible to choose between them, they will share the two $50 Westfield vouchers and boxes of chocolates.

The much anticipated raffle was drawn. Helen won the fabulous prize of the helicopter flight, with Nadine and Sheryl winning second and third prizes.

A big thank-you to the army of volunteers who gave up their Saturday to set up the Island, which looked bright and festive with all the bunting. The upstairs area was welcoming with fresh flowers on all the tables. On the day, volunteers made sure that the day ran smoothly, and all guests were looked after. As usual the Island looked fabulous. Thanks in particular to Greg who works so hard to keep it looking that way.
