Winter Series Race 4

July 12, 2010

Heat 4 of our winter series was held on Sunday July 10th.  We had a turnout of seven MMYC yachts and given the fresh conditions our friends at Carrum wisely decided not to join us.

The conditions were conducive to fast sailing around the course so with a 15-20 knots north to northwesterly wind on a moderate sea we headed off to the mussel culture, then to No 1 buoy and back to the Mordy pier. With the fresh conditions all boats were back at the finish in around an hour and quarter, so we had most of the fleet crossing the line very close together.  This provided plenty of excitement for each of the crews and for interested onlookers on the end of the pier where Jenny took this great series of shots.

Rowan Higgon on Boumbah avoided all the finishing excitement by taking line honours some ten minutes before the rest of the fleet. Well done to Boumbah. However, on handicap Rowan came in second with myself & crew on Solitaire in first place and Peter Sutton third on Ruff Cut.

Ruff Cut provided one of the highlights for the day. At the start line - she got very close to the starting buoy and managed to snag the buoy's line on her keel.  So the buoy tagged along for a short part of the race till the crew sorted out the mess!  After an actioned packed start like this Ruff Cut recovered well to finish in the placings. Results of the day's event can be seen here.
