Along with the shot of Peter Banham, the following article appeared in the Local Leader Newspaper this week:

HUNDREDS are expected at a July rally to demand dredging of a stinking, choked-up Mordialloc Creek.

Creek users have banded together to form the Mordialloc Creek Community, a group lobbying authorities to urgently fix the waterway and put in place a better maintenance system to halt further deterioration.

The call echoes that of late Mordialloc boat builder Jack Pompei, who told the Leader in May 2007: “Before I die I’d like to see the creek back to how it was ... but I don’t think I’ll ever see it happen.”

Garry Spencer, who helped start the group, said members would fight to end years of neglect. “The creek’s condition is bordering on shameful and in some parts there is only four inches (10cm) of water at low tide,” Mr Spencer said.

Boat hire operator Marcus Allnutt estimated the last major dredging was almost 30 years ago. Kingston Council infrastructure manager Warren Ashdown said a contractor was being sought to undertake the dredging, which he hoped would be completed before summer. He said the dredging would likely go as far as the council’s boat ramp.

But some estimates put the cost of the project at $7.5 million, which would require money from the State Government. Mordialloc and Carrum state Labor MPs Janice Munt and Jenny Lindell have both urged Water Minister Tim Holding to fund the project.

But South Eastern Metropolitan Liberal MP Inga Peulich criticised Ms Munt and Ms Lindell for neglecting the creek.

The Mordialloc Creek Community will meet on the north bank of the creek at 11am on July 31.
