Action on an Issue

July 07, 2010

The highly promoted July General Meeting on Tuesday night was well attended, with over 60 people from our club, as well as the Sailing and Angling Clubs meeting on the Island. Following a short session of club business, proceedings for the remainder of the evening were put into the capable hands of Peter Banham, one of the key organisers of the Mordialloc Creek Community action group.

General Meeting

Aided by a Powerpoint Presentation, Peter outlined the major issues of our Creek in Crisis and went on to urge all those in attendance to lend their support to the cause. Peter pointed out that silt levels were at an all time high, mooring poles were in a state of disrepair and errosion was causing damage all the way from the creek mouth up to the public slipway.  However with those and many more issues so obvious, the major problem is that those in authority seem to have little concern for the issues and have no real plans to address them in the future.

In order to raise public awareness, a Rally has been orgnaized at 11AM no July 31st at the Hazel Pierce Reserve, which is the grassed area close to the bridge and round-about. Members are urged to attend the event and bring along others for support. There'll be a BBQ and musical entertainment but of course the aim of the event is to highlight the problems that confront the local community and others who use this great area.

As well as the Rally, a range of posters and flyers are being produced. These will be placed in local businesses and handed out in shopping centres. Over the next few weeks presentations will be made to councillors, local politicians and community groups in the area. It's vital that as many people as possible are made aware of the issues and that positive solutions to the problems are discussed.

The four main aims of the MCC group are:

  • Accept there is a Problem
  • Agree to fight the Problem
  • Present a plan & dates for Action
  • Agree to ongoing consultation with those in authority

With so much to do, those in attendance were urged to put their hand up and take on a task. Over the course of the evening a number of jobs were allocated to members - but there's still a lot to do.

All members are urged to lend their support, so please contact Gary Spencer or Peter Banham and put your hand up too.
