Great Photo Ops

May 23, 2010

Heat 2 of the Winter Competition was held on Sunday and with the 11AM+ start times, some skippers and crews were out on the water well in advance, working out how best to start in the very still conditions. The boys an girls from Carrum motored in and set up, while the remaining MMYC boats trickled out, making it ten boats in all to start.

Winter 2010 Heat2 15

It looked like there was going to be virtually no wind to run the event in but just before the main group of vessels were to start, the wind picked up a little from the East and things started to move. Boumbah quickly broke out a spinnaker adding a splash of color and one or two other skippers decided to join in as well. But as the fleet moved off North towards Beauie it was hard to tell whether those with the kites out were having an easier run of it or not!?

Back behind the start line sitting things out for the later start, were Silver Cloud and Da Vinci. Of course even in the very light conditions they were moving along well and it was only a matter of waiting the extra minutes before they could set off after the main group. Silver Cloud timed her start well and the spinnaker bag could be see readied on the foredeck for the starting line. Da Vinci already had her brilliant red kite out and they were holding it in as they circled the start line.

Quiet Cloud

Then just as Silver Cloud crossed the line the breeze vanished leaving them crawling down the first leg with lots of color hauled up but no energy being generated.  Not sure what was happening with our other starter at that point but if you take a look at the photos you might find her off on another course.

In the end most boats finished and Silver Cloud obviously overcame the slow start to take out first place. Results will be posted on the Events page as soon as they come to hand.
