Latest on the Longbeach
LATE NEWS FROM MIKE-
There has been a change of the results to the Longbeach heat on Saturday. It seems the spreadsheet as prepared by CSC had a few bugs in it - these have been ironed out and the results are now posted on the RESULTS page. Taking these as gospel we won the first three places. Well done to this guys for this terrific team effort.
In summary we have won the heat and even when we rerun the abandoned race from Sunday it is unlikely that CSC can win the series.
Monday's Report
We had two races scheduled for the weekend - the Twilight on Saturday evening and then a Round the MMYC Buoys race on Sunday morning.
The Saturday Twilight Race out to the spoil ground mark then to Fawkner beacon and back to MMYC, was as usual a terrific race. It was sailed in fresh wind (15-20 knots) from the North with a moderate chop. The wind was gusting to around 25 knots, so the conditions made for a fast race. All boats were back at the club by 8:45pm just as the light was fading.
We had 13 boats start at varying times from 4:00pm through to 5:30pm, nine of the fleet were MMYC and four from CSC. Of our nine boats eight finished. Unfortunately first timer John Bailey in his Boomeroo 22 Antares pulled out just after his excellent start with damaged rigging. There were no other mishaps, however there were a few close encounters between the six boats starting at 5pm - a good competitive start.
As far as the results were concerned MMYC came in 1st & 2nd - this adds to our 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the first race. First on handicap and also line honours was Andrew Woodward in Sarah and second Matthew Hubbard in Just Mist. Great sailing by both of these crews. Carrum had two its boats in the top five Casper 3rd and Bitter Sweet 4th.The other MMYC yachts taking out the other top ten places. This was a great team effort for MMYC.
On Sunday with moderate West to South West wind and a lumpy sea the fleet set off at 1030am. We had 17 yachts closely queuing up at the start off the pier making for a great sight. The fleet was away within 30 seconds or so of each other with Derak Haagsma in his new boat Vertrans Affairs winning the start. However, all of this was to no avail as our course included rounding the MMYC buoy as the second mark. When our leading boat got to the vicinity of the buoy, it was now where to be seen. After a bit of scouting the buoy was not to be found and the race was called off. We will be rescheduling another race sometime in March.
Later when we were having lunch, we received a phone call to advise that the MMYC buoy was at Sunnyside Beach between Mt Eliza and Mornington. It seems it broke away from its mooring some time between Thursday Morning and Saturday night, with the fresh northerly winds over Friday and Saturday taking the buoy on a Peninsular Cruise. A mission to retrieve the buoy was undertaken Sunday afternoon.
All in all the club has had a busy weekend for both Yachts and Motor boats - this just underlines what fun there is to be had at out great little club.
