Bad Moon Rising
Wednesday last week - and the weather had worked it's way up to present a pretty hot day. By early evening it seemed like the perfect time to head down and take the boat out to watch the sun set. On arrival at the club I discovered that the tide was about as low as it gets - it was a full moon. Still I was determined to get out. So after really struggling to get the lines off and borrowing some weight from my neighbour Mark on the bow to set Nina right in what little water there was - I was eventually free.
Heading down the creek, the depth guage showed about .8 of a meter of water below me most of the way and for once it got a little deeper as I approached the recently dredged mouth. Still I was nervous. Finally out on open water I noticed Rene and Peter on their boats not far from the end of the pier enjoying the great conditions.
However it didn't take long for me to realize that something was wrong - the boat felt strange. I headed in towards the beach, jumped over the side and found that somewhere along the creek I'd picked up a huge ball of fishing line. I spent the rest of the evening with Nina in waste deep water trying to remove the line that had wound around the shaft. But in the end I knew I wasn't going to get it all. Early next morning I was down at the club where Peter soon had Nina up on the slip to cut away the remaining line.
And then on Saturday, there was Rene with Sheba up on the slip too. With the extremely low water that same evening, he'd clipped the reef on his way back in and had done a bit of damage that needed to be sorted.
And after all that, will we go out again next time the water is that low?
Probably!
