Last for Winter 09

Sunday was scheduled as the last event in this years Winter Competition having been postponed a few weeks back. So quite a number of skippers were determined to get out on the water no matter what. For some boats, it was their first outing for several months with cancelled events and wild weather having kept them on the mooring. There was a busy atmosphere around the Island as skippers and crew prepared their craft discovering the odd thing that wasn't quite in order.

The weather forecast was for windy conditions from the North and Northwest but it didn't take long to work out that those conditions were not going to show for the event.  It was a slow start for the whole fleet with skippers hauling up all sorts of sail combinations to try and get an edge on the next guy. At one stage one boat was even seen drifting backwards across the start line!

Quicksilver and Silvercloud were joined just after the start by a Mordi Saling Club vessel who decided to show them what a lightweight and a spinnaker could do with almost no wind. In any case the fleet slowly headed out towards No1 and as the day wore on conditions improved enough to get most of them around the course. It was then back to the Island for the Breakup Barbie.  Most of today's fleet and hopefully some extra boats will lining up again next weekend with the Summer Competition commencing as soon as next Sunday.
