More than thirty members armed with a great selection of
out of date flares attended the special night following the General Meeting on Tuesday August 4th. Peter Donaldson showed us the difference between the types of flares we all carry and how to identify them, even in the dark! He then spoke about how and where they should be carried on our boats and then gave us a step by step guide as to how and where we should use them, pointing out the dangers along the way.
Then came the part of the evening we'd all been waiting for. Everyone moved outside to the North West corner of the Island and with the wind to our backs we all proceeded to fire-off as many flares as were available. For about 30 minutes the Island was awash with smoke and an eerie red glow, no doubt attracting attention from passers by.
It really was a great learning process and I'm sure everyone who attended can confidently use their flares in the future, should the need arise. If you were unable to attend on Tuesday, I'm sure you'll soon find a member who could fill you in on many of the details - minus the demo of course!
