On the Slip
July 20, 2009
As its right in the middle of winter quite a number of maintenance jobs have been undertaken over the past few weeks by members on their boats. The main slipway has a procession of vessels through it keeping Peter, Marcus and the various skippers busy.
Gary's 22ft Steber Persuader came up for a long list of jobs to be done since it's recent purchase. She's a Clinker style vessel with a fibreglass hull, lock up cab, v-berth, galley and driven by a diesel inboard shaft drive. Gary says she'll get along happily at about 12 knots and can do up to 16. With most items finished in the allocated time on the slip, she's now back in the water sporting her new name "Sunshine".A few weeks earlier Graeme had a sudden visit to the slip when an engine bearer gave way in Samantha. After taking stock of the situation, Graeme's decdided to replace the old engine and he's been lucky enough to secure a new one at a "pretty good price" which will be fitted in the near future.
The new purchase is a Perkins- Sabre M92, 4cyl 4.23 litre, (90 hp @2400 rpm), ZF Hurth hydraulic gearbox with trolling valve. Wet weight 455 kg. It's replacing a Kelvin R4 (75 Hp @1500 rpm) and Borg Warner velvet drive gearbox. Dry weight 1400kg. There'll be a story to tell when this changeover takes place!
And currently I have Nina up on the slip for a few days. A long awaited cut and polish is under way following a thorough Acid wash by Peter. Albert will be down to finally replace all of the windows, which have been difficult to see out of since the boats purchase last September. Add an anode or two to this - and I hope she'll be back in the water by mid week.
